Tender Moment Safe to come back

GLORI, based in Ann Arbor, MI, is an Orthopedic surgical outreach program to La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Our mission is to ease suffering, improve health and promote well-being for those in need.

We are a 501c3 Not-For-Profit Organization that serves the poor and injured in the Dominican Republic. We provide planning, logistical

A team of 13 licensed, experienced and dedicated health care professionals travel to La Romana, Dominican Republic to volunteer at El Buen Samaritano Hospital, a non-profit charitable hospital that provides care for local residents and Haitian immigrants. The patients we serve have limited resources and no other options for treatment.

The typical team is made up of experienced health care providers including:

  • 4-6 Orthopedic Surgeons including trainees
  • Anesthesiologist and certified nurse anesthetists, surgical technicians and nurses
  • 2 CRNAs (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist)
  • 2 Surgical Techs
  • 1 Orthopedic Nurse
  • 1 Floor Nurse

The goals for GLORI are:

  • Provide planning, staffing and support for 1-2 orthopedic missions to El Buen Samaritano Hospital La Romana DR per year
  • Coordinate with other orthopedic humanitarian missions providing services at El Buen Samaritano Hospital
  • Work with local physicians and medical staff in exchanging ideas and techniques in the care of these patients
  • Use virtual technology in providing continuity of care throughout the year with patients and local medical staff

Nitty Gritty

We have 2 operating rooms and can generally perform 3 surgeries/room/day which means we can get 6-8 cases done a day. We do surgeries Monday–Thursday, so on average we do 24 surgeries each visit in addition to clinic pre and post surgery care.

Long-term Goals

With more funding we could expand the mission trip to incorporate a knowledge exchange with Dominican surgeons and surgical residents to create a deeper impact where the American team teaches the Dominican team their techniques and the Dominicans share their skills, tools and resources as well.

The Dominican surgeons who work at the charitable hospital have other full-time hospital jobs because the work with the charitable hospital is either volunteer or paid extremely low wages. With increased funding we could support our team’s costs while also contributing towards the Dominican health care providers wages.

Your generous support can help our volunteers, a team of experienced and licensed health care providers, save a life or a limb!

Donations

Your generous support can help our volunteers, a team of experienced and licensed health care providers, save a life or a limb!

Each trip costs about $25K.

Each trip requires personnel to provide quality health care to the patients. The health care professionals who volunteer use personal vacation time or unpaid time off to donate their services on these trips. We would like to support our team of volunteers by covering the costs of travel and room and board.

GLORI provides all the medical materials when they are there. (El Buen Samaritano Hospital is supportive of these trips but does not have the financial ability to provide any materials.) Your donations will go towards the following costs:
